Pickleball Return of Serve: How to Win the Rally From the Start

The return of serve is the second most important shot in pickleball, right after the serve. A good return neutralizes the serve, gives your team time to advance, and puts the serving team on defense. A weak return hands momentum to the other side. Here's how to make your return a weapon.

The goal of the return

Your return does three things: gets the ball back in play (avoiding a fault), lands deep in the opponent's court (preventing an easy third shot), and gives you time to advance to the kitchen line. Deep, consistent returns are more valuable than aggressive winners.

Return deep

A return that lands near the opponent's baseline forces them to hit their third shot from a less comfortable position and gives you more time to advance. A short return near the kitchen line lets them step in and hit a comfortable third shot drop or drive.

Return cross-court

Cross-court returns are the highest percentage. The angle is wider, the net is lower at the center, and the diagonal distance is longer. Return cross-court by default and go down-the-line only as a deliberate tactical choice.

Advance after the return

As soon as you hit the return, move forward toward the kitchen. You have an advantage, the serving team must let your return bounce before they can advance. Use that time to get to the kitchen line while they're still at the baseline.

Vary return depth and spin

Consistent returners who always go the same depth and speed become predictable. Occasionally return with topspin (dipping into the kitchen area) or slice (low-bouncing), and vary the depth between deep and mid-court. Unpredictability disrupts the server's third-shot preparation.

Return strategy against big servers

Against a heavy topspin serve, soften your grip on the paddle to absorb pace rather than fighting it. Step back a foot beyond your normal return position to give yourself more reaction time. Block the ball back deep rather than swinging fully, the pace of the serve will carry your return.
