The Complete Beginner's Guide to Pickleball
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and for good reason. It's easy to learn, intensely social, and ridiculously fun. Whether you've never held a paddle or you're just looking to go from backyard rallies to competitive open play, this guide covers everything you need to get started.
What is pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport played on a badminton-sized court with a lowered net. Games are played singles or doubles, and the ball is a plastic wiffle-style ball. Points can only be scored by the serving team, and games are typically played to 11 (win by 2). The sport combines elements of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton.
What equipment do you need?
To get started, you need a pickleball paddle and balls. Entry-level paddles cost $30–80 and are perfect for beginners. You'll also want court shoes (tennis shoes work great), avoid running shoes, which don't provide the lateral support you need. Most community centers and parks provide balls for open play.
The basic rules
The serve must be made underhand and land in the diagonal service box. The ball must bounce once on each side before volleys (hitting it out of the air) are allowed, this is called the two-bounce rule. There's a 7-foot non-volley zone near the net called the Kitchen. You can't volley from inside the Kitchen. Points only count when your team is serving.
How to find your first game
Most cities have public pickleball courts in parks and recreation centers. Open play sessions are beginner-friendly, just show up, introduce yourself, and jump in. Apps like The Pickle Nest make it easy to find open play sessions, connect with other beginners, and see which courts near you are active. Most open play rotates players every game, so you'll meet new people quickly.
Tips for your first session
Keep the ball in play, consistency beats power for beginners. Play kitchen-forward: the best positioning in pickleball is at the non-volley zone line. Communicate with your doubles partner. Don't swing too hard. And most importantly: have fun. The pickleball community is welcoming and you'll improve quickly with court time.
