Pickleball Mixed Doubles: Strategy, Positioning, and Tips
Mixed doubles, one male and one female player per team, is the most popular format in recreational pickleball and a major professional circuit. It introduces unique positioning dynamics and tactical considerations not present in same-gender doubles. Here's everything you need to know.
The basic mixed doubles dynamic
In most recreational mixed doubles, there's a common pattern: opponents target the female player more than the male, especially in co-ed open play settings. Being aware of this dynamic, regardless of which gender you are, lets you position to counter it.
Stack to keep your strong player covered
The most common mixed doubles strategy is stacking so the stronger player (regardless of gender) stays on the side that gives them a forehand on balls hit to the middle. Many teams stack so the male player covers the middle when the female is at risk of being targeted, but the strategy works in any direction.
Communicate roles clearly
Who takes the middle ball? Who poaches? Who covers the lob? In mixed doubles, these need to be answered before the match, indecision on shared balls costs more points than strategy errors. Decide before you step on court.
Target the transition zone
Balls aimed at an opponent during their advance to the kitchen, specifically at the mid-court feet, are the hardest to handle in mixed doubles. The player advancing is often the one to target, as they're least stable during transition.
Lob intelligently
Lobs over the shorter-reach player can be effective in mixed doubles, but predictable lobbing gets tracked down quickly. Use lobs when an opponent is positioned aggressively at the kitchen line and a clear overhead is not available. Never lob when the opponent is already several feet back.
Respect each other's games
The best mixed doubles teams play to each other's strengths. If your partner has a better dink, let them reset. If you have a better overhead, position to take lobs. Egos that override tactical sense lose matches that skill would have won.
