Pickleball Footwork: How to Move Better on the Court
Good footwork is the foundation of every good shot in pickleball. Most missed shots trace back to poor positioning, reaching instead of stepping, flat-footed instead of ready, out of balance at contact. Here's how to develop efficient movement that makes every shot easier.
The ready position
Between shots, stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, weight on the balls of your feet. Hold the paddle up and in front of you. This ready position lets you push off in any direction within a split second. Flat-footed players are always one step late.
The split step
The split step is a small hop you take just as your opponent makes contact with the ball. Landing with slightly bent knees in a wide stance reloads your muscles for explosive first movement. Pro players split step on every shot. It's the single footwork habit that makes the biggest difference, at any level.
Cross-step for wide balls
For balls well outside your immediate reach, use a cross-step: push off your back foot and cross your front foot toward the ball. This covers ground faster than shuffle-stepping for longer distances. Return to center after each shot.
Shuffle step for close balls
For balls within one step, shuffle (don't cross your feet) to maintain balance. Crossing your feet on short-distance moves creates instability and slower recovery.
Advance to the kitchen as a unit
In doubles, both players should advance to the kitchen line together after the two-bounce rule is satisfied. Move in unison, if one player stops at the transition zone while the other advances, there's a gap between them opponents can exploit.
Recovery position after every shot
After each shot, return to your ready position and reset your feet. Don't watch the shot you just hit, move immediately. Recovery is what allows you to play the next ball cleanly, regardless of where your opponent sends it.
