Pickleball NVZ
The NVZ (non-volley zone), universally called the kitchen, is the 7-foot area on each side of the net. It's pickleball's most unique rule, defining where players cannot volley and shaping the entire strategic landscape of the game.

NVZ rules, what's allowed and what's a fault
Seven scenarios, green for legal, red for fault.
Enter the NVZ to hit a ball that has bounced
Completely legal. Step in, let the ball bounce first, and hit it. Step back out when done.
Stand in the NVZ between rallies or during the rally
You can stand in the kitchen any time you're not hitting a volley. Some players like to stand in the kitchen, it's legal.
Reach your paddle into the NVZ to volley
As long as your body isn't in the NVZ during contact, your paddle can reach in. Only body position at contact matters.
Jump over the NVZ line to volley (Erne)
The Erne is a legal shot, jump around the outside of the NVZ post to volley while landing outside the NVZ (beyond the sideline). Not in the NVZ = legal.
Volley while standing in the NVZ or on the NVZ line
Fault. Any volley while any part of your body touches the NVZ or the NVZ line is immediately a fault.
Volley and then fall into the NVZ (momentum fault)
Fault. If your forward momentum from volleying carries you into the NVZ after contact, it's still a fault, even if you've already hit the ball.
Volley from mid-air after jumping from the NVZ
Fault. If you jump from inside the NVZ, volley mid-air, and land outside, it's a fault because you were in the NVZ when you initiated the shot.
The momentum rule, most misunderstood NVZ rule
If you volley and your forward momentum carries you into the NVZ, even a fraction of a second after contact, it's a fault. The rule is: you must be able to stop your forward movement before entering the kitchen after a volley. Players who lunge forward at contact frequently violate this rule without realizing it. Practice stopping your weight transfer immediately at contact.
NVZ strategy
How to use the kitchen rules to your strategic advantage.
Control the NVZ line, don't stand in the kitchen
Standing at the NVZ line gives you maximum reach with no contact-zone risk. Players who step into the kitchen during exchanges are giving up position without gaining reach.
Force opponents to volley from below net height
When you hit balls low toward the kitchen, you force opponents to volley upward, creating a ball you can attack downward. Low balls to the kitchen are the foundation of all advanced kitchen strategy.
Use the bounce to your advantage in the kitchen
If a ball lands in your kitchen and you need time to reset, let it bounce inside the NVZ, step in, and hit a soft reset. You're legally in the kitchen with the ball having bounced, use that freedom.
Watch for the momentum fault
The most common NVZ fault in intermediate play isn't standing in the kitchen, it's post-volley momentum. Practice stopping your forward momentum immediately after contact at the kitchen line.
Frequently asked questions
What is the NVZ in pickleball?
The NVZ (non-volley zone), also called the kitchen, is the 7-foot area on each side of the net. Players cannot volley the ball (hit it out of the air) while standing in the NVZ or touching the NVZ line. They can enter the NVZ to hit a ball that has already bounced. The NVZ prevents players from standing at the net and smashing every ball downward.
What are the NVZ rules in pickleball?
NVZ rules: You cannot volley from inside the NVZ or while touching the NVZ line. If your momentum carries you into the NVZ after a volley, even if you've already made contact, it's a fault. You CAN enter the NVZ to hit a ball that has bounced. You CAN stand in the NVZ at any time when you're not volleying. Your partner can stand in the NVZ, only the player actually hitting the volley is restricted.
What is the momentum rule in pickleball NVZ?
The NVZ momentum rule states that if your forward momentum from executing a volley carries you into the NVZ, even after you've already hit the ball, it is a fault. This prevents players from using a running volley jump into the kitchen as a way around the NVZ rule. You must be able to stop your momentum before entering the NVZ, or you must not have been in contact with the NVZ when the ball was hit.
Can you reach into the NVZ to volley?
Yes, you can reach your paddle into the NVZ to hit a volley, as long as you are not touching the NVZ line or standing in the NVZ when you make contact. The rule restricts where your body is, not where your paddle travels. However, any part of your body (including your clothing or paddle that then touches your body) contacting the NVZ during or immediately after the volley is a fault.
