Youth pickleball

Pickleball for Kids

Pickleball is one of the easiest racket sports for kids to pick up. The smaller court, softer ball, and simple scoring mean most children are playing real rallies within the first session, and competing in games within a week.

Age-by-age progression

What to expect at each stage of youth development.

Ages 5-7

Start with paddle-and-ball coordination games, short rallies close to the net, and foam/soft balls. No formal rules, just hitting and having fun. 15-20 minute sessions maximum.

Ages 8-10

Introduce the kitchen rule, basic serving, and simple scoring. Modified courts (smaller) work well. Start playing short games to 7. Focus on consistency over power.

Ages 11-13

Full court with standard rules. Introduce dinking, third shot concept, and basic doubles positioning. This age group learns quickly, they can reach 3.0+ within months of regular play.

Ages 14+

Adult rules, equipment, and competition. Many 14+ players compete in junior divisions of adult tournaments. USAP offers junior national championships for competitive players.

Youth equipment guide

Paddle

6-7oz, junior grip size (4 inch)

Lighter paddle = easier on small arms and wrists

Ball

Soft foam or low-compression outdoor ball

Softer balls bounce slower, more time to react

Shoes

Lateral court shoes or tennis shoes

Same rules as adults, lateral support is critical

Net height

Standard (34in at center) or modified 30in

Some youth programs use lower nets for ages under 8

Tips for teaching kids pickleball

Start with coordination drills before rallying

Have kids bounce the ball on the paddle, balance it, and toss-catch before they try to hit it back and forth. Coordination comes before competition.

Make it social from day one

Kids who play with friends stick with the sport. Bring friends, join youth groups, or enroll in group lessons rather than one-on-one practice.

Emphasize fun over winning early

Score keeping too early creates pressure. Play 'see how long we can rally' games instead of competitive games for the first few sessions.

Watch professional matches together

Watching pro pickleball builds interest and shows what the sport looks like at its best. It's also a great way to discuss strategy without pressure.

Find a youth program for faster improvement

Youth clinics and programs accelerate learning dramatically compared to playing alone with parents. Group environments create healthy competition and faster skill development.

Frequently asked questions

What age can kids start playing pickleball?

Kids can start playing pickleball as young as 5-6 years old with modified equipment. Most youth programs start at age 7-10 with smaller paddles and softer balls. By age 10-12, most children can play on a standard pickleball court with adult rules. The sport's smaller court (compared to tennis), lower net speed, and simple scoring make it one of the most accessible racket sports for children at any age.

What equipment do kids need for pickleball?

Kids' pickleball equipment: a lighter paddle (6-7oz) sized for smaller hands, junior paddle grips are typically 4 inches vs. adult 4.25+ inches. Soft foam balls or slower outdoor balls are better for beginners. Court shoes with lateral support are important (the same rules as adults). Many youth programs use shorter nets and modified court sizes for younger children. Brands like Gamma, Selkirk, and Paddletek make junior-specific paddles.

How do you teach kids pickleball?

Teach kids pickleball by starting with hand-eye coordination (tossing and catching the ball on the paddle), then rally practice close to the net, then introduce scoring last. Focus on the kitchen rule early, it prevents bad habits. Keep sessions short (20-30 minutes) and fun. Play games like 'keep the rally going' rather than competitive scoring for the first few sessions. Most kids 8+ can play real games within 2-3 sessions.
